Adaptive Leadership: Driving Progress on Complex Challenges
The most difficult issues in assisted living—high turnover, resistance to new protocols, inter-departmental conflict—are rarely solved by simple policies; they are Adaptive Challenges.
This 3-hour strategic session equips managers and executive leaders with the crucial ability to distinguish between Technical Problems (solvable with expertise) and Adaptive Challenges (requiring shifts in beliefs, values, and behaviors). Participants will apply this framework directly to a current organizational problem, learning how to mobilize change from any position of authority. Leaders will leave with a plan for conducting "leadership experiments"; designed to achieve genuine, lasting progress.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define Leadership as Action: Reframe leadership as the activity of mobilizing others to make
progress on tough problems, regardless of their title or position. - Diagnose the Adaptive Gap: Master the diagnostic tool to accurately distinguish Technical
Problems from Adaptive Challenges within their organization. - Design Progress Experiments: Identify a current organizational issue and develop several
measurable, low-risk "Leadership Experiment"; to engage key stakeholders and make progress
toward a long-term solution.
