Taking Care of People Who Take Care of People:
Practical Ways to Support the Mental Health of Others and Yourself at Work
Supporting employee mental health has become one of the most important - and most challenging - parts of working in assisted living today. Leaders and team members are navigating emotionally demanding work, staffing shortages, and constant resident needs all while trying to take care of themselves and each other.
This 3-hour workshop led by Beth Ridley of Ridley Consultants, provides a practical, realistic approach to supporting mental health at work without requiring anyone to be a therapist or take on more than they can sustain.
Why This Matters Now
In assisted living, the work is deeply human and emotionally connected. Teams are:
- Supporting residents through aging, illness, and end-of-life experiences
- Managing high workloads with limited staffing
- Carrying emotional weight while still expected to show up with compassion and consistency
This creates a unique kind of pressure:
- You can’t always “step away” from the work
- You don’t control your schedule the way other industries might
- And the emotional impact of the work doesn’t just turn off at the end of a shift
Without simple, sustainable ways to support mental health, burnout, turnover, and emotional exhaustion become the norm.
What Participants Will Walk Away With
Participants will leave with:
- Clear understanding of what their role is (and is not) when it comes to supporting others
- Simple ways to notice when someone may be struggling before it escalates
- Practical language to start supportive conversations without overstepping
- Realistic ways to care for their own energy and well-being within the constraints of their role
- Small, repeatable habits that fit into the work they’re already doing
