16/17 Year Old Staff May Administer Routine Medications with Waiver

Legislative , Regulatory ,

In an effort to help with the workforce crisis, 16/17 year old staff members may now administer routine medications provided the community-based residential facility (CBRF) obtains a waiver from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

In the waiver request, the CBRF should require registered nurse (RN) delegation for the routine medications administered by the 16/17 year old staff member(s). The CBRF should also list the specific training and policies/procedures the CBRF has in place on medication administration and nurse delegation.

If the CBRF has any recent citations pertaining to medication administration or nurse delegation, the CBRF should provide information on how the citation has been corrected. DHS will review the waivers on a case by case basis.
