WALA News for August 27, 2010

1. New BAL Memos

The 2010-2011 Seasonal Influenza Recommendations that are ready for distribution.  These recommendations are based on the ACIP recommendations as published in the August 6, 2010 MMWR.  These recommendations will guide you with the use of the currently licensed seasonal influenza vaccines available in the US.  This document is posted on the WI Immunization website at:
http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/immunization/index.htm

DQA Memo 10-021/Healthiest Wisconsin 2020: Everyone Living Better, Longer.  The Healthiest Wisconsin 2020 Plan: Everyone Living Better, Longer, is now available.

The plan calls for building disease and injury prevention into many different aspects of community life, including laws and policies, education, healthcare and even the physical layout of communities. It also stresses the need to eliminate disparities in health outcomes like infant mortality, provide fair access to conditions needed for good health, and emphasize lifelong prevention to achieve the highest quality of life at every age. Access the Plan here.

DQA Memo 10-020/Guidelines for Reporting to the Department of Health Services

Many WALA members are confused about what needs to be self reported and what does not.  This memo was designed by BAL to provide more clarification.  After reading the memo, please let WALA know if you still need clarification and we will pass your concerns onto BAL.

Chapter DHS 83 (CBRF administrative rule) and Chapter DHS 88 (AFH administrative rule) include requirements for mandatory reporting of specific incidents. This memo provides guidance to providers about information that should be included when the reports are related to resident falls, elopements, injury, change in condition, or behaviors resulting in police intervention. It is important that providers include sufficient information for department review in conjunction with these reports.

2. Public Town Hall Meeting in Madison Re-Cap

Thank you to WALA members who attended the Public Town Hall Meeting on August 25, 2010.  There was close to 200 people there in support of protecting Medicaid! We listened to over 10 people's testimonials, heard from local Senators, Representatives and County Board members.

We ask for your support to keep the momentum going!  Please sign the online petition asking Wisconsin gubernatorial candidates and legislative candidates to make a pledge to support and sustain Medicaid funding.

3. Community Training Opportunities

DQA and UW Oshkosh Repeat Abuse Prevention Training for Trainers

As the result of a federal grant awarded to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Center for Career Development (CCDET), the Division of Quality Assurance and the University are pleased to repeat the popular Caregiver Abuse & Neglect Prevention train-the-trainer workshops in locations statewide.  These workshops are intended to give facilities regulated by DQA the necessary tools to train their own direct care staff.

1)    Experiential DVD Training for Trainers:  Receive a free copy of the award-winning DVD that depicts 6 common scenarios of abuse and neglect by caregivers.  This half-day workshop trains participants to use the DVD to maximize learning for direct caregivers.

2)    Topical Training for Trainers:  This 4-hour workshop covers approximately 16 hours of ready-made training for direct caregivers on topics such as communication skills, professional boundaries, responding to challenging situations, skills for professional success, reducing stress, and more.

The target audience for these workshops includes facility trainers, supervisors and persons responsible for making training decisions.

Both workshops will be presented on consecutive days in the following cities this fall:

  • Tomahawk (9/29 & 9/30)
  • Brookfield (10/11 & 10/12)
  • Manitowoc (10/13 & 10/14)
  • De Forest (10/26 & 10/27)
  • Eau Claire (11/9 & 11/10)
