1) BQA New Survey Process

BQA has announced their new AL survey process and it was implemented in January, 2004. This has the potential of being a very helpful process for those with good track records with BQA. Even more, they are asking that each facility - after the survey - send back to BQA a Survey Feedback Form. Info includes:

  • BQA's PowerPoint presentation on the new survey process - note especially: Key codes on page 5; Entrance Checklist, Survey Guide and Post Survey Questionnaire on page 8; Technical assistance on page 11; The Abbreviated Survey on page 13.
  • BQA memo 03-015 about the new BQA Post Survey Questionnaire [In PDF] [In Word]
  • Cover letter to the facility at the time of the survey describing the Post Survey Questionnaire with the comments: "The Bureau believes your feedback is valuable." [In PDF] [In Word]
  • The Post Survey Questionnaire itself - note that facilities may respond anonymously! [In PDF] [In Word]
  • BQA released a new memo (BQA 03-107 [In PDF] [In Word]) in mid-December outlining the new survey process. But more importantly, they also just released a new 12 page Survey Guide with much more detail. It is worth reading

WALA will have more information in the January issue of our newsletter, WALA WATCH. In addition, we have invited BQA Chief Kevin Coughlin to speak at the WALA conference in March to provide more details.

2) Administrators and Management Course

Don't miss this course, January 21 & 22, 2004 at Oak Hill Terrace Training Center in Waukesha! Registration is limited to 40.

Brought back for a 5th year due to overwhelming demand, this course is unlike any you have ever taken. In two days WALA's industry experts will help you learn the tools you need to lead your team effectively - from the assisted living basics to specific departmental needs.

Information and registration is available [In PDF] [In Word] or by calling the WALA office. This has always been a good course to learn and refresh administrative skills.

3) Buying and Selling Seminar

Assisted living facilities are unlike any other type of real estate, and so is buying or selling them. You are buying (and/or selling) not only the real property, but also the real world business of resident care and operations

Join us Wednesday, February 18, 2004 for this useful seminar - even if you are not NOW planning to buy or sell. Presented by Mike Collins of Collins Realty Group, this interactive seminar will cover the buying and selling process from start to finish and from the perspective of both buyers and sellers. Mike will use case studies taken from actual deals to demonstrate the pitfalls to avoid when buying or selling.

The half-day seminar (8:30 - noon) will be held in Waukesha.

Registration is limited to 40. More Info [In PDF] [In Word]

4) 2004 WALA Conference - Information and Early Deadlines

Information and Early Deadlines - The 2004 WALA Conference is set March 23 - 25, 2004 at the Olympia in Oconomowoc. Summary information is on the WALA website - including registration fees so you can plan your budget.

In addition, all exhibitors and/or sponsors who confirm by December 15 will be in the 4,000 agendas that will be mailed in January. This is the largest assisted living conference in Wisconsin and with the optional networking groups by regulatory category (CBRF, RCAC or AFH) on March 23, we have 3 jam-packed days you won't want to miss.

5) Insurance Crisis

BQA has asked WALA and the other associations to gather information on how your insurance costs are rising. [Online print version of survey] This survey is an important one and we ask that you fill it out as soon as you receive it. WALA will mail to ALL CBRFs, RCACs and AFHs next week. A few of the questions include:

  1. Are people/facilities experiencing unavailability of liability or homeowners insurance?
  2. If yes to #1, is this new? Have insurers pulled out of this market? Is this industry being "coded" by the insurance companies differently now then they use to be?
  3. If insurance is available, have the costs increased dramatically?
  4. If yes to #3, approximately by what % has the insurance increased?
  5. For small providers, is there a different problem between obtaining liability insurance and homeowners insurance? If so please explain the issues.
  6. In your answers, please indicate the provider type (CBRF, AFH, RCAC or ADC) if the issue is unique to a certain provider type.
  7. Can WALA provide your name to BQA or do you wish it to be anonymous?
  8. Anything else BQA needs to know to help solve this issue?

The survey will be sent next week and WALA must receive all responses by January 6. Results will be posted on the WALA website in January. Now is your chance to tell BQA what is happening with insurance in your company. While you may respond to a similar survey from other associations, please also reply to this one for your AL beds so we have statewide responses.

6) Community Partnerships For Older Adults Grants

Community Partnerships For Older Adults is an eight-year, $20 million grant initiative of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In this second round of funding, a maximum of 17 communities will receive development grants of up to $150,000 for 18 months. Letters of intent are due January 9, 2004.

This national program fosters community partnerships that will improve long-term care and supportive services systems to meet the current and future needs of older adults. The program challenges partnerships to build on their experience, share and learn from other communities, and help to shape state and national policy as solutions are developed and implemented for the future.

Diversity is a guiding principle of this initiative. The program seeks applications from existing community partnerships or collaborative groups with broad and diverse memberships from communities throughout the United States.

The full Call for Proposals and information about how to apply are available online at the program Web site: http://partnershipsforolderadults.org
